By Tuesday, August 23, 2022, after a short struggle with COVID, Young had passed away from natural causes.

Young was a prominent representative of the contemporary American poetic tradition, being in line with such figures as John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, and Kenneth Koch. Young, who is frequently regarded a second-generation New York School poet, was heavily influenced by the French Surrealists, including Andr√© Breton, Paul √Čluard, and the rest of the group.

He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University. At the University of Texas at Austin’s Michener Center for Writers, Young has held the William Livingston Chair of Poetry since 2008.

His most recent books are Bender: New and Selected Poems and the collections Fall Higher and The Art of Recklessness.

As a result of his poem “Strike Anywhere,” Young was awarded the Colorado Prize for Poetry, a Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University, and grants from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2002), the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Several of his poems have been included in editions of The Best American Poetry since 1993.

His tenure as Texas’ Poet Laureate lasted all of 2014.
