Andrea Schmid-Shapiro Death, Obituary Is Not Available – Andrea Schmid-Shapiro passed away peacefully at her home in California on 21 September at age 88. Andrea was a four-time Olympic medallist. Born on 4 August 1934, Schmid-Shapiro, nee Andrea Bodo, was a talented athlete who represented her native Hungary at two Olympic Games, contributing to her team’s silver medal performances in Helsinki (FIN) in 1952 and Melbourne (AUS) in 1956.
Her biggest accomplishment came at her second Olympics, where the Hungarian women memorably won gold in the Team Portable Apparatus event. A precursor to Rhythmic Group Gymnastcs, Team Portable Apparatus was contested only at the Helsinki and Melbourne editions of the Games.
Andrea defected to the United States from Hungary in 1956. Schmid-Shapiro was instrumental in the development of rhythmic gymnastics in the United States. Over the years, she remained active by teaching and coaching the sport in addition to serving on the FIG Rhythmic Technical Committee (1984 to 2001) as its Secretary and Vice President, as a FIG brevet judge judging at four Olympic Games, and in conducting numerous judges courses throughout the world.
Andrea was an author and contributor to several books and articles on gymnastics and sport psychology. She earned her undergraduate degree in physical education and her doctorate in Higher Education/Teacher Education, both at the University of California in Berkeley. She has been a Professor of Kinesiology at San Francisco State University for 34 years. She currently serves on the USA Gymnastics Executive Committee as the Vice Chair for Rhythmic and the Board of Directors as a Rhythmic National Membership Director.
A mother and grandmother, Schmid-Shapiro resides with husband Charles in Novato, California. She is survived by her husband Charles Shapiro, daughter Aniko, and two granddaughters.
